While Swimmers Fled Danger, Viral Picture Captures Rescuer Dashing ‘Full Speed’ In the Direction of the Site.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong resident of Bondi, has always considered the famous beach as her personal space. On a recent weekend night, she, like many others in the area, heard cracking sounds echoing around the neighbourhood.

“That was the initial assumption, but I reasoned it was daylight and you couldn't spot any lights,” she explains. Exiting her home, she observed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The faces she saw made it clear something was wrong.

Positioned on the road, conversing with a pair who had run up the incline in their swimwear, she became aware of someone moving up from behind. It was a lifeguard, running at full speed towards Bondi barefoot from the nearby Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while carrying a medical device.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I just saw this flash of blue,” she recalls. “He was zooming past. He was the only one heading in the opposite way that the crowd was trying to flee, and hauling that sizeable pack and barefoot … He moved into something that certainly every instinct would tell you to run in the reverse way.

“Absolutely no pause, but just totally full throttle racing.”

A Symbol of Heroism During Chaos

The photo taken by Ching of the rescuer, since identified as Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as a prime example of acts of courage in the aftermath of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, another beach safety officer, noted that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to assist the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to work with surf lifesavers, police and medical teams caring for dozens of victims.

Collective Reaction and Support

Doolan’s actions was part of a broader narrative to come out of the neighbourhood, with the lifeguard clubhouse adjacent to the scene of the attack becoming a impromptu treatment center. Accounts show that other team members were also seen helping out, including rushing into the surf to rescue people in distress.

Following the tragedy, comments of appreciation circulated widely. One post conveyed thanks for the responders who exhibited that “kindness will always triumph over darkness”.

The squad of beach patrol later shared a statement, noting they were “processing what happened”.

“Thank you all for your thoughtful messages and encouragement. We are touched by the compassion for our team,” the group commented. “When ready, we will recount our experiences in the belief that it supports those involved.”

Official Commendation

Waverley council, the administrative organization that oversees many professional beach safety officers, said that the team rose to the occasion from the moment the shooting started until late that nighttime.

“People have shared so many moving stories, but the popular image of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help assist the injured is extraordinary,” stated a mayor.

“Our lifeguards show selflessness every day in keeping our internationally renowned beaches safe for the public, but what we witnessed on Sunday should be highly praised.

“As we grieve and come to terms with the terror of this violent and horrific act of violence, I think it is vital that we consider just how much light we have witnessed in the face of such darkness.”
